Your family deserves support.
Our families can be our foundation in life.
Research indicates that our most durable, lasting relationships are between family members. While friendships and romantic partnerships may come and go, families are forever. Some of our fondest, most formative memories are made and shared with siblings, parents, grandparents, and other extended family members.
While the family circle is supposed to be full of love, fun, and connection, many families struggle.
Some families experience a major stressor, such as:
- Divorce or separation
- Remarriage and family blending
- Loss of a family member or beloved pet
- Moving to a new area
- Supporting a family member with mental illness
- Abuse and other traumatic experiences
Other families may simply drift apart, struggle to communicate, or otherwise are not working well together.
No matter what your family is going through, we want to help.
Whether you are hoping to bolster the family bond or looking for a new beginning, our family therapists are here for you. We provide family therapy for people from all over Maryland, and we would love to work with you and your loved ones.
What is family therapy?
Family therapy, also known as, “family counseling” is a talk therapy service designed to help parents, children, and other family members address family problems. The family meets together with the therapist as a team to learn to overcome unhealthy patterns, be open and vulnerable, and work well together. The family therapist is there to help notice breaks in communication, help everyone feel heard and respected, and help facilitate change in the family dynamic.
What are some signs that we need family therapy?
The fact that you are reading this indicates that you are worried about your family and wanting help. We get it – it is hard to ask for help, and sometimes the hardest part is getting started.
If your family is simply looking to learn to communicate well and love each other more, then great! Family therapy can help. That being said, families usually come to therapy because something is not going quite right.
Some of the main “red flags” indicating that your family needs therapy include:
You do not have to do this alone. If you and your family are going through tough times, family therapy can help.
How can family therapy help?
Family therapy is designed to help in three main ways.
First, family therapists can provide a safe, judgment-free space for you, your partner, and your children to share and feel heard. Your family may normally resort to heated arguments or maybe even worse, avoid disagreements with one another, but the family therapist is there to facilitate important family conversations and promote safe expression.
Second, therapists can identify unhealthy and unhelpful patterns of communication. Your family may have habits in your relationships that seem “normal” or just part of how you interact which tend to perpetuate your problems. Family therapists can help you learn to break free from those patterns and work better as a team.
And third, therapy offers a chance for your family to get to know one another on a deeper level. As the family learns to open up, each of you will gain critical new insights regarding how other members think and feel. The more each member is able to tune into and understand one another, the more effective you can be at connecting and the deeper your relationships can grow.
